ICanUp Tips Are Live: Starting with Laravel when()

ICanUp now has a dedicated format for short practical solutions from real development work. The first Tip is already live and explores Laravel when(), conditional queries, the third argument as an else branch, and an important falsy-value pitfall.

Not every useful discovery needs a full-length article.

Sometimes the solution fits into a few lines of code. Sometimes a small language or framework feature is simply worth keeping close at hand. And sometimes one tiny detail can save an hour of searching later.

That is why ICanUp now has Tips.

What ICanUp Tips are for

Problem → Solution

A Tip can start with one concrete problem and move directly to a practical solution.

Useful Constructs

A single Laravel, PHP, or tooling feature can be worth documenting on its own.

Real Cases

Just like ICanUp articles, Tips grow from real development work rather than invented examples.

Quick Reading

The format is designed for moments when a developer needs a concrete answer without a long introduction.

The first Tip is about Laravel when()

The first Tip covers a Laravel feature I use regularly: when() for conditional query building.

Instead of breaking one query chain apart with separate if statements, the condition can remain inside the fluent query itself.

There is more to it than the basic example: the callback can receive the actual condition value, the third argument works as an else branch, and values such as 0 need special care because they are falsy.

The first Tip is already live

Laravel when(): conditional queries without unnecessary if statements.

One small construct, but several practical details that can make query code cleaner and prevent subtle bugs.

Tips are a dedicated content type

Tips are not implemented as shortened Posts.

ICanUp now has a dedicated Tips domain with its own Admin management, Topics, Tags, Types, covers, and public detail pages.

This allows the format to evolve independently while still remaining part of the same content platform.

Useful Tips should be easy to find again

Topics and Tags

Tips can be grouped by technology and subject so the library remains useful as it grows.

Search

Tips are part of the unified ICanUp search together with Posts, News, and Categories.

Feed

New Tips can appear directly in the main public feed between regular Posts.

Related Content

A Tip page can lead to additional material from the same topic.

Tips have their own visual language

I did not want Tips to become another plain text card.

The cover is the primary visual element. It can show the problem, a code comparison, or one short principle before the visitor even opens the Tip.

In the feed, this also makes a Tip visually distinct from a full Post or a News item.

Tips already use the shared ICanUp platform

The new format immediately reuses the common ICanUp infrastructure.

Tips support SEO, localization, sitemap integration, search, views, and analytics. They can participate in the unified feed and work alongside other public content types.

This makes Tips more than a temporary section: they are another first-class content type that can grow with the blog.
